Masjid Aqsa
holds great importance in Islam as it is the second mosque of the world. It
keeps a special place in our heart because the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W)
was transported from Mecca to Al-Aqsa during the night expedition (Miraj). It
is situated on the small mount in the old city of Jerseulem and has great
historic significance. All of Allah’s messengers prayed together, which was the
most extraordinary congregation in the world. This place holds value in other religions
too. This land has many clandestine and tales to enlighten, but in present
years, it has come under great difficulties. Here are some facts you must know
about this sacred and the historical place.
First Qibla
for Muslims
Al-Aqsa
holds a special place in the life of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) and his
companions for lots of reasons. Al-Aqsa is one of the sacred places in Islam as
Muslims initially perform their prayers in the direction of it. It is also
known as the worship place and Muslims pray daily in the direction of the Noble
Sanctuary, which is called Al-Aqsa now. And during the prayers, Prophet
Muhammad (S.A.W) ordered to take the Kaaba as Qibla through revelation.
It’s not
just a Mosque
Yes, there
is a misconception that we think one building at the southernmost corner of the
Masjid is the Al-Aqsa, but the fact is multiple mosques on this place are known
as Al-Aqsa. It is closest to Qibla that’s why it is usually called as Qibla
Mosque and sometimes it is referred to as Haram Al-Sharif. So the entire
complex is Masjid-Al-Aqsa and other mosques are also on this site have
historical importance.
The Dome of
the Rock
The
beautiful gold dome was originally wooden with each brass or ceramic and the
gold color given by Khalifa Ustmaniyyah Sulayman. And the gold dome rocked and
looked differently. The iconic dome originally was built approximately thousand
years later during the rule of Ottoman Khalifah and the unique gold layer was
added to the dome that now looks astounded. It is said that the dome of the
rock is the first dome, whichever to be used in Islamic architecture.
A
slaughterhouse
It is used
to be as a slaughterhouse during the first war when the Crusaders took over the
city Jerusalem. They found many hidden Muslims who are trying to keep them
safe. They killed approximately 70,000 Muslims in the mosque and later, they
built their stables for their animals.
It is a
burial ground
There are
certainly many Prophets and Sahabas are buried there, but there is not a
precise record. The burial ground is also said to be resting place of Hazrat
Sulaiman (A.S) as we know that He was passed away there.
Legendary
pulpit
The greatest
hero of Islam, Nooruddin Zengi had a unique pulpit built in the Masjid Al Aqsa
when it would be finally retaken from the crusaders. The pulpit was not only
beautiful but also has individuality in structure. Salahuddin accomplished the
wish of his teacher and released the Jerusalem and installed member there
again. It is still considered the work of legend among craftsmen.
